Fat Tuesday Celebration With Rebirth Brass Band
The Chapel · Tue, Feb 17 · 8:00 PM · $53.00
Why Go
Grammy-winning New Orleans brass band, Tremé institution since 1983. Funk, soul, hip-hop, and a 25-year Tuesday residency at the Maple Leaf.
About the Artist
Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans institution, full stop. Founded in 1983 by brothers Phil and Keith Frazier along with trumpeter Kermit Ruffins (who later went solo), they started as high schoolers at Joseph S. Clark Senior High in Tremé. Four decades later, they're still going: Grammy winners (Best Regional Roots Music Album, 2012), Jazz Fest regulars, and holders of a 25-plus-year Tuesday night residency at the Maple Leaf Bar that's become a pilgrimage site for anyone who cares about New Orleans music.
Their sound is traditional brass band—second line rhythms, call-and-response—shot through with funk, soul, jazz, and hip-hop. It's the music of weddings and funerals, street parades and sweaty clubs, updated without ever losing the thread. Flea called them "the best band on earth, stunning." Phil Frazier's tuba is so iconic that NOLA Brewing put it on a beer can.
The Chapel holds maybe 400 people, which means you're getting a club show from a band that regularly plays festival main stages. Tuesday night is going to be a party—high energy, call-and-response, and the kind of groove that makes standing still feel like a waste. Come ready to move.
